Seeking Forgiveness: Its Method and Number

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Please tell us about seeking forgiveness, its formula, its method, and the number of times we should say it each day; this is because a person feels that he is falling short, and he may have committed a great sin, and he may have missed much good deed. May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
Seeking forgiveness is commanded and prescribed, and a person is in great need of it. Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said: :
and ask forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
[Surat al-Baqarah:199], and He said -Exalted and Majestic is He-:
And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by transgression], remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sinsوَالَّذِينَ إِذَا فَعَلُوا فَاحِشَةً أَوْ ظَلَمُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ ذَكَرُوا اللَّهَ فَاسْتَغْفَرُوا لِذُنُوبِهِمْ
[Al-Imran:135].
The believer is commanded to seek forgiveness at all times. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to seek forgiveness frequently, and he is the master of the children of Adam, and Allah had forgiven him what came before of his sins and what came after, and yet he used to seek forgiveness frequently, and he said:
I swear by Allah that I seek Allah's Pardon and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a dayوالله إني لأستغفر الله في اليوم والليلة أكثر من سبعين مرة
Riyad as-Salihin 1870
and he said:
O people! Repent to your Lord, for I repent to Him a hundred times a day.
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 34:847
-peace and blessings be upon him- So seeking forgiveness is a required matter, and the believer, male and female, should seek forgiveness frequently.
The formula for this is to say: I seek forgiveness from Allah, I seek forgiveness from Allah, three times after every prayer, when one says the closing salam after the obligatory prayer, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do: I seek forgiveness from Allah, I seek forgiveness from Allah, I seek forgiveness from Allah. And if one says at all times: O Allah, forgive me, O Allah, forgive me my sins, (I seek forgiveness from Allah the Great, who has no god worthy of worship except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer, and I repent to Him), all of this is good.
The point is: one seeks forgiveness in any formula, O Lord, forgive me, or O Allah, forgive me, or O Allah, forgive me my sins, or O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness and I repent to You, or I seek forgiveness from Allah the Great, who has no god worthy of worship except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer, and I repent to Him, all of this is good. And among his supplications (peace and blessings be upon him) in the authentic hadith was:
O Allah, forgive me my faults, my ignorance, my immoderation in my concerns. And Thou art better aware (of my affairs) than myself. O Allah, grant me forgiveness (of the faults which I committed) seriously or otherwise (and which I committed inadvertently and de- liberately. All these (failings) are in me. O Allah, grant me forgiveness from the fault which I did in haste or deferred, which I committed in privacy or in public and Thou art better aware of (them) than myself. Thou art the First and the Last and over all things Thou art Omnipotent.
Sahih Muslim 2719a
and among his seeking of forgiveness was:
"O Allah, forgive me my former and latter sins, what I have kept secret and what I have done openly, and what I have done extravagance; and what You know better than I do. You are the Advancer, the Delayer, there is no god but You."
Sunan Abi Dawud 1509Sahih (Al-Albani)
.
The master of seeking forgiveness, which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) encouraged, is:
O God, Thou art my Lord. There is no god but Thee. Thou hast created me, and I am Thy servant and hold to Thy covenant and promise as much as I can. I seek refuge in Thee from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Thy favour to me, and I acknowledge my sin. Pardon me, for none but Thee pardons sins.
Mishkat al-Masabih 2335
.
If one says it in the morning with certainty in it, he will enter Paradise, and if he says it in the evening and dies upon it, he will enter Paradise. It is a great virtue, and it is called the master of seeking forgiveness, meaning: the chief of seeking forgiveness and its best.
