The questioner : There are hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that upon every Muslim, on every day the sun rises, is a charity, and that tasbih and dhikr are charity. On many occasions, I perform tasbih and dhikr of Allah and intend in my heart that the reward and recompense of what I say is charity for my deceased mother. And when I cook, I say: the reward of this work, that is, the reward of cooking, is charity for my mother (may Allah have mercy on her). Is this action correct?
The Shaykh : This action is not correct regarding the charity that becomes due upon every joint of a person. The Messenger (may Allah’s prayer and peace be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 1009 A salamah is a bone, meaning that upon every bone of a man or woman is a charity on every day the sun rises. Then the Prophet (may Allah’s prayer and peace be upon him) mentioned that tasbih, takbir, tahlil, enjoining good and forbidding evil, helping the needy, and the like are charity.
If a person intends these acts to be charity on behalf of a deceased person, it does not suffice for him, because the reward has become for the one for whom he made it.
On this occasion, I would like to say to the questioner: It is better for a person to make righteous deeds for himself, and to make supplication for his parents. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 1631.
The questioner : Thank you, O honorable Shaykh, and may Allah bless you and your knowledge and benefit the Muslims through you.

Sadaqa is due on every joint of a person, every day the sun rises.

When a man dies, his acts come to an end, but three, recurring charity, or knowledge (by which people) benefit, or a pious child, who prays for him (for the deceased).
