The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets and the Imam of the righteous, and upon his family and his Companions, and those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment.
As for what follows: On this Thursday, the first day of the month of Safar, or the thirtieth of the month of Muharram, we open this session, as is our custom, with praise to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and blessings and peace upon His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). On this Thursday, the first day of the month of Safar, or the thirtieth of the month of Muharram, we open this session, as is our custom, with praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds. We praise Him, seek His help, and seek His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our own souls and from the badness of our deeds. Whom Allah guides, none can mislead, and whom He leaves to mislead, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger. Allah the Exalted sent him with guidance and the religion of truth. He conveyed the message, fulfilled the trust, advised the nation, and struggled in the cause of Allah with true struggle. May the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them in excellence until the Day of Judgment.
I have decided to open our sessions with some exegesis of the Noble Qur'an, and let it be from Surat al-Naba', because these surahs are often recited, often recited, in the Maghrib and 'Isha' prayers. So we begin first with Surat al-Naba'. Allah the Exalted said:[An-Naba 78:1-3] meaning: About what are they asking one another? Then Allah the Exalted answered this question, saying: [An-Naba 78:2-3] This news is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) brought of clear proofs and guidance, especially what he brought of reports concerning the Last Day, the Resurrection, and the recompense. People differed regarding this news that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) brought; some believed in it and affirmed it, while others disbelieved in it and denied it. Allah made clear that those who denied it will know, with the knowledge of certainty, what they denied, and that will be when they see the Day of Resurrection: [Al-A'raf 7:53] For this reason, He said here: [An-Naba 78:4-5] The second sentence is an affirmation of the first in terms of meaning, even though it is not an affirmation according to the terminology of grammarians, because He separated it from the one before it with a conjunction, and an affirmation is not separated from what it affirms by any letter. The knowledge by which Allah threatens them is the knowledge of certainty that they will witness, in accordance with what they were informed of. Then Allah the Exalted explained His blessings upon His servants to establish these blessings and obligate them to be grateful for them, saying: [An-Naba 78:6-9] to the end. Allah the Exalted made the earth a bed, prepared for creation. It is not so hard that they cannot till it or walk on it except with difficulty, nor is it so soft and yielding that they cannot benefit from it, but it is prepared for them according to their interests and according to what they benefit from. As for the mountains, Allah the Exalted made them pegs, like the peg of a tent, which secures it, so it is secured by it, and it is also secure, as He the Exalted said: [Fussilat 41:10] These pegs, the earth scientists say, are mountains that have roots firmly fixed in the earth, just as the root of a peg is fixed in a wall. Therefore, you find them solid and strong, not shaken by the winds. This is part of the perfection of His power and His blessing. meaning: Pairs, some male and some female, some young and some old, some black and some red, some wretched and some happy, and so on, in which people differ. They are pairs that differ according to what Allah the Exalted willed and what wisdom required, so that people may take heed of the power of Allah the Exalted and that He is able to make these humans, who were created from a single substance, into various types and kinds. [An-Naba 78:9] meaning: A cessation of fatigue. Sleep cuts off the fatigue that preceded it, and through it, a person gains new energy for the future. Therefore, you find a man who becomes tired, then sleeps and rests, and his energy is renewed. This is a blessing, and at the same time, it is one of the signs of Allah, as He the Exalted said: [Ar-Rum 30:23] [An-Naba 78:10] meaning: Allah made this night on the earth like a garment, as if it is wearing it, as if the earth is wearing it, and it becomes an outer garment for it. This is not fully known except by one who has risen above the shadow, above the shadow of the earth. We have seen this in the wondrous signs when one rises in an airplane and ascends, and the sun has set from the surface of the earth, and then you see the sun after you have ascended. You find the earth as if it is covered with a black garment; you do not see anything of the earth, it is all darkness beneath you. This makes clear His saying, the Exalted: [An-Naba 78:10] As for the day, He made it a means of livelihood in which people live, seeking sustenance according to their ranks and conditions. This is part of the blessing of Allah, Glorified and Exalted, upon the servants. Let us stop at this part of this surah, and we ask Allah the Exalted to make it beneficial and to make us and you among the people of the Qur'an, who are the people of Allah and His special ones, and to make us among those who recite and benefit. Indeed, He is Generous and Bountiful. And may Allah send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them in excellence until the Day of Judgment.
