A relative of mine fell ill, and my mother asked me to bring her *'azaim* from those who recite over people, and that man asked me for (1000 riyals) in exchange for these

The questioner : A relative of mine fell ill, and my mother asked me to bring her *'azaim* from one of the people who recite over people. That man asked me for a sum of one thousand riyals in exchange for these *'azaim* that are placed at the head of the sick person. What is the ruling on these *'azaim*? And what is the ruling on this man taking this exorbitant amount? I ask for your guidance.

The Shaykh : Regarding these *'azaim*, it is not permissible for a person to use *'azaim* of which he is unaware until he knows that they are from the Qur'an, from the authentic Sunnah, or from permissible supplications. As for going to any person he finds who recites over people or writes *'azaim* for them and asking him for that, this is not permissible. As for placing them at the head, there is no basis for it, and none of the Salaf did it. However, some of the Salaf permitted *'azaim*, if they are from the Qur'an, to be worn by a person or placed in water and the residue of the ink that dissolves in this water to be drunk.
As for placing them at the head or placing them under the pillow, there is no basis for it. As for taking a fee or compensation for these *'azaim*, what a person should do is not to do it, and if he does, there is no blame on him. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted taking a fee for *ruqyah* in the story of the Companions whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent. They were hosted by a people who did not host them, so Allah sent upon their master a scorpion that stung him. Then they came to the Companions asking for a reciter, and they said: "We will not recite for you except for so much and so much of sheep." They gave them some of the sheep, and this reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he approved it.
As for the reciter taking a large fee for a small task, I advise him to fear Allah (Mighty and Majestic) toward his brothers, and not to exploit their necessity to extort their money, but rather to take what he sees is his right, and as for what exceeds that, he should be scrupulous about it.

The questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh, and may Allah bless you and your knowledge.
