The Ruling on Hanging Amulets and Explaining How to Seek Healing with the Qur'an
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
What is your opinion of those who go to have amulets made that contain verses from the Qur'an,And it is said to them: and place them under their pillow, or wet them and drink the water?
As for seeking healing with the Qur'an, it is prescribed. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the story of the group of men he sent, who then stayed with a people as guests, but these people did not host them. So the Companions moved aside, then Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) caused the leader of the people to be stung by a scorpion, and the matter became severe for him.So they said: He said, "Go to these people who stayed with you and ask them; perhaps one of them is a healer." So they came to the Companions and said, "Is there among you a healer?"They said: Yes.
So one of them went to the leader of the people. And he said to them: He said, "We will not perform ruqyah for you except for a fee." So they gave them some sheep. The man recited Surat al-Fatihah over the stung man, and he stood up as if he had been untied from a rope; in an instant he stood up. Then the Companions were confused about the sheep they had taken. So they said: They said, "We will not eat them until we go to al-Madinah." So they came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of the matter. He said: "Take them and give me a share with you." Then he said, "And what makes you think it is a ruqyah? [Meaning: Surat al-Fatihah]." So seeking healing with the Qur'an is a sought-after matter and has benefit. But in what manner do we seek healing with it?We say: We seek healing with it in the manner reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), which is by the reciter reading over the patient. This is reported.
As for hanging something containing parts of the Qur'an around the neck, some of the Salaf permitted it and others prohibited it.So among those who prohibited it: [It was prohibited by] 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and some of the scholars from the Salaf and Khalaf permitted it.
As for placing it under the pillow or hanging it on the wall or the like, these are manners that were not reported from the Salaf. It is not befitting for us to do an action that none of the Salaf preceded us in. Likewise, and even more so, is what some people do: they read over water containing saffron, then they take papers and draw lines in them with this saffron, lines in which nothing is read. This is also an innovation, and it is not correct or valid.
