A leader raised his voice for the Maghrib prayer but forgot he was the leader and did not recite al-Fatihah aloud, then he bowed; what is required of the followers?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Your Eminence, a leader raised his voice for the Maghrib prayer but forgot he was the leader. He was distracted by something, then he recited al-Fatihah and began the surah after al-Fatihah quietly. Then he remembered and repeated the recitation of al-Fatihah.

The Shaykh : There is no harm in that.

The questioner : So the question, O Shaykh, is if he raised his voice as the leader, raised his voice but did not recite al-Fatihah aloud, what is required of the followers?

The Shaykh : I mean, did he repeat the takbir from the beginning?

The questioner : No, he recited al-Fatihah, then he began the surah after al-Fatihah. So if he raised his voice...

The Shaykh : Raised his voice for the bowing?

The questioner : For the bowing, yes. So what is required of the followers?

The Shaykh : Nothing is required of them. The most that can be said is that he did not recite aloud, and reciting aloud is a recommended practice, not obligatory. Even if a person leaves it intentionally, nothing is required of him.

The questioner : Did the followers not hear the recitation of al-Fatihah and did not recite al-Fatihah?

The Shaykh : No, the follower must recite al-Fatihah, even in the prayers where recitation is aloud, due to the generality of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
There is no Salat for the one who does not recite Fatihatil-Kitab. لا صلاة لمن لم يقرأ بفاتحة الكتاب
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 247Sahih (Darussalam)
.

The questioner : They were waiting for the leader to recite it so they could recite after him, but they waited and did not recite?

The Shaykh : I say this is strange of them. How could they wait for such a long period and not alert him? It appears that forgetfulness also overcame them, and it is expected that they would alert him.
In any case, whoever prayed and did not recite al-Fatihah must repeat his prayer. If they did not recite it, they must repeat their prayer.

The questioner : It has been years for them now.

The Shaykh : It has been years or months for them now; they must repeat the prayer.
