Some scholars said that it is not prescribed for one who performs wudu' but does not pray to renew his wudu', even though wudu' is an independent act of worship.

The questioner : Some scholars said that it is not prescribed for one who performs wudu' but does not pray to renew his wudu'...?

The Shaykh : That is, renewing the wudu'. They said it must be after a prayer, and that is the case. However, the first wudu' that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed, it seems he did not intend it for prayer. For this reason, it was a light wudu' in which he did not rub thoroughly.

The questioner : Is wudu' not a required act of worship?

The Shaykh : Yes, for a person to be in a state of ritual purity is a required matter. But it is not like the one who performs wudu' in order to pray. It seems the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not intend to pray with this wudu'. For this reason, he made it light and did not rub thoroughly.
