Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: Abdullah ibn Yusuf narrated to us, saying: Malik informed us from Ibn Shihab from Ubayd Allah ibn Abdullah ibn Utbah from Umm Qays bint Mahsan:
that she brought a baby boy of hers who was not yet eating food to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace أنها أتت بابن لها صغير لم يأكل الطعام إلى رسول الله صلّى الله عليه وسلم
Muwatta Malik 2:110
.

The Shaykh : In your copy: to. Or: the Messenger of Allah.
The student: to.

The Shaykh : All the copies?
The reader:
to God’s messenger. He set him on his lap, and the child passed water on his garment; so he called for water and sprinkled it, but did not wash it. إلى رسول الله صلّى الله عليه وسلم فأجلسه رسول الله صلّى الله عليه وسلم في حجره فبال على ثوبه ، فدعا بماء فنضحه ولم يغسله

The Shaykh : May Allah send prayers and blessings upon him. This is regarding the ruling on the urine of young children: is it ritually impure or not? And if it is ritually impure, how is it washed?
As for the answer to the first question: We say that the urine of young children is ritually impure, and the evidence for this is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered it to be washed.
As for the method of washing it, it is not like severe ritual impurity, but its impurity is lightened, so its purification is lightened. How is it purified?
Water is brought and poured over the place of impurity until it covers it all, and it is purified thereby. It does not require rubbing or wringing, unless a person wants to wring it to speed up its drying, in which case there is no harm, but there is no necessity for it.
And her statement in the hadith:
Who had not yet eaten food لم يأكل الطعام
This is a reference to the cause, which is that this young child is nourished by milk. The scholars said that the difference between him and one who is nourished by food is that the one who is nourished by food is nourished by something heavy, food that is eaten and drunk, unlike the one who is nourished by milk, for milk is light. So when the lightness of the milk is combined with the smallness of the child, the impurity becomes light. But are males and females equal in this?
The answer is no, this is specific to males. And what is the aspect of that?
The original ruling for what is ritually impure is that it must be washed. We departed from this original ruling based on what is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding male children, that sprinkling is sufficient for purifying their urine. So females remain on the original ruling that washing is necessary. Just as we say that the feces of the young child whose urine is sprinkled must be washed, because this is the original ruling.
