(The belief of the Kalbites and the Asha'irah regarding the Noble Qur'an, that it is a statement or a narration, and the refutation of the verse of al-Akhtal in this regard) And for this reason they claimed the Book

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : He said: "And for this reason they claimed the Book is a statement *** And a narration of that Qur'an
We have nothing with us except the created, and the*** Qur'an was not heard from the Most Merciful"

For this reason they claimed that the Qur'an is a statement and a narration of the speech of Allah. These are the Kalbites and the Asha'irah. They said that the speech of Allah is not heard and is not in letters, but it is the meaning that subsists in Himself, and that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) created sounds that are heard as a statement of this speech or a narration of this speech. For this reason the author said:
"What is the speech of Allah ever in reality *** But a metaphor, and woe to this slander"
This is a painful word and a warning against this slander that these people held. If they make the speech a statement of the meaning that subsists in the Self, is the meaning that subsists in the Self ever called speech? And the saying of the one who said:
"Indeed, the speech is in the heart *** And the tongue is only made a sign for the heart
"
They say that the one who said this verse is the famous Christian al-Akhtal, and some denied that he said it because it was not found in his diwan. In any case, it is not a proof, because the meaning of his saying "Indeed, the speech is in the heart" is that the solid speech that is considered to be what comes from the heart, whereas the incoherent speech is what is on the tongue. So the true, solid, beneficial speech is what comes from the heart. A person first estimates it with his heart, then he speaks with his tongue, but it cannot be said that he is a speaker until he speaks with his tongue.
