The Shaykh : This passage, the author (may Allah have mercy on him) explains what befell the Imams of Islam from these people of denial of the divine attributes, saying:
"Indeed, you have seen the trials that befell the ***Imams of Islam over the ages", especially the Imam of the people of the Sunnah (may Allah have mercy on him), the Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal.
"Especially when they won over an ***ignorant man of power among the people, possessing authority", meaning the ignorant caliphs who had power and authority over the people; these Mu'tazilah or people of denial of the divine attributes won them over.
"And they approached him with every clear lie, ***indeed, they swore to him with the most severe oaths"
"They swore to him" means they swore oaths to him, as Allah the Exalted said about Satan:[Al-A'raf 7:21]. They swore to him that their intention was advice, meaning they come to the king, the caliph, and say, "The matter is such and such and such, and by Allah, we intended nothing but advice."
"Like the advice of ***Satan when he was alone with the two parents"
What did he say to them?[Al-A'raf 7:21], he says:
"That their intention was advice, like the advice of ***Satan when he was alone with the two parents"
The ignorant caliph who has authority is deceived.
