What is the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding eating the addax?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : May the Shaykh be honored, what is the ruling of the Shari'ah in your view regarding eating the addax? Is it lawful or forbidden? Because I see some people saying that it is forbidden, and I do not know of a ruling on this matter. I ask for your guidance?
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets, the Imam of the Pious, and the Intimate Friend of the Lord of the worlds, and upon his family and his Companions, and those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment. Eating the addax is lawful, and there is no harm in it, because this was established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
But here is a matter I would like to point out.
The questioner : Yes.
The Shaykh : It is that some people act improperly in obtaining the addax by torturing them severely, even though they can be caught without it. It is known that if a person can achieve his objective from these animals by an easier means, it is not permissible for him to use a harder one, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1409Sahih (Darussalam) For example, if the addax can be extracted from its burrow with water, it is not permissible to extract it with fire, because fire causes more pain and harm to it than water. And if it can be hunted with a rifle, meaning with a bullet, it should not be hunted with a stone or the like, because a stone might kill it. If it dies from being killed by a stone, it becomes forbidden to eat because it was killed by beating.
The important point is that a person must obtain the addax, and other things that Allah the Mighty and Majestic has made lawful, by the easiest possible means, and it is not permissible for him to follow the harder path when the easier one is possible.
The questioner : May Allah bless you. The honorable Shaykh says.

So when you kill, then do the killing well, and when you slaughter, then do the slaughtering well. Let one of you sharpen his blade, and let him comfort his animal (before slaughtering).
