Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : I read in my gatherings for the deceased what is called al-Farakiyat, meaning: the wailing over the dead person in front of his family and at their request. Is this act forbidden or lawful, knowing that I earn my livelihood from this work?

The Shaykh : Wailing over the dead person is among the major sins.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : It is not merely forbidden; it is forbidden and a major sin among the major sins, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the one who wails and the one who listens to her, and he said:
If the wailing woman does not repent before she dies, she will be made to stand on the Day of Resurrection wearing a garment of pitch and a chemise of mange. النائحة إذا لم تتب قبل موتها تُقام يوم القيامة وعليها سربال من قطران ودرع من جرب
Sahih Muslim 934
So you must repent to Allah and abandon this work. Know that what you have earned from this work is illicit and forbidden to you. If your body grew from it, it is like what grows from other forbidden wealth. Also know that if you fear Allah the Exalted and leave this work for the sake of Allah, then Allah the Exalted will open for you doors of provision that you did not expect. Allah the Exalted said:
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (3) And will provide for him from where he does not expect. وَمَنْ يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا * وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لا يَحْتَسِبُ
[At-Talaq 65:2-3]
Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you. This listener did not mention his name here. He says.
