Did Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) discern in the man that he was an innovator?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : He discerned in this man that he was what? That he was an innovator. And for this reason, he ruled according to the dictates of this discernment and ordered that he be expelled from the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) mosque, expelled from al-Masjid al-Nabawi, which is for all Muslims. Why? Because this man was a source of harm, and Imam Malik in Madinah had his own authority and his own measure. And for this reason, he ordered his expulsion. But Ma‘bad al-Juhani and ‘Amr ibn ‘Ubayd, in the gathering of al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him), when he asked them about the divine decree, did not say, “Expel them.” Rather, he told them the truth and then instructed them to withdraw to another place in the mosque. And they proceeded to expound the doctrine of the Mu’tazilah, because for every occasion there is a fitting speech, and a person may have his weight in one place but not in another. So be it. He (may Allah have mercy on him) said, “Yes, the manner of the rising above the Throne is not unknown, and the how is not conceivable,” just as his student said.
