Explanation of the Book of the Adhan-04a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: Abdullah ibn Yusuf narrated to us, saying: Malik informed us from Abu al-Zinad from al-A'raj from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
By Him in Whose Hand my soul is I was about to order for collecting firewood (fuel) and then order والذي نفسي بيده لقد هممت أن آمر بحطب فيحطب ثم آمرُ بالصلاة
Sahih al-Bukhari 644

The Shaykh : I order
The reader: With a damma, O Shaykh?

The Shaykh : It is dammah.
The Reader: Yes.

The Shaykh : I have two views on it, but the conjunction is the original.
The reader:
and then order Someone to pronounce the Adhan for the prayer and then order someone to lead the prayer then I would go from behind and burn the houses of men who did not present themselves for the (compulsory congregational) prayer. By Him, in Whose Hands my soul is, if anyone of them had known that he would get a bone
Sahih al-Bukhari 644
, a rib, O Shaykh?

The Shaykh : A rib, a rib, with the 'ayn open.
The reader: If one of them knew

The Shaykh : A rib
The student: A scribal error?

The Shaykh : Yes, a scribal error.
The reader:
if anyone of them had known that he would get a bone covered with good meat or two (small) pieces of meat لو يعلم أحدهم أنه يجد عَرْقا أو مرماتين
Sahih al-Bukhari 644

The Shaykh : A fat rib
The reader:
a bone covered with good meat or two (small) pieces of meat present in between two ribs, he would have turned up for the `Isha' prayer. عَرْقا سمينًا أو مرماتين حسنتين لشهد العشاء
Sahih al-Bukhari 644

The Shaykh : This hadith indicates that congregational prayer in the mosque is also obligatory, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was on the verge of burning the houses of those who lagged behind it with fire. Those who said that congregational prayer is a recommended practice and argued against this evidence by saying that he was only on the verge and did not actually do it, should be told: If a person of lower rank than the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) were to say such a thing about something in which a person has a choice between doing it and leaving it, it would not be possible. And even if we conceded their point, the words of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) here would be mere nonsense and idle talk with no benefit. You would be amazed to hear such things said by distinguished scholars in defense of their position, even though they know that if they were to say, for example, "I was on the verge of burning you with fire if you delayed," the child would know that this was intended to compel him. This is a known thing, and glory be to Allah that they place the words of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in this position out of following desire. But we know that these are scholars who exercise independent legal reasoning, and we ask Allah to forgive their error.
