What is the meaning of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intending to burn the houses of those who lagged behind in the congregational prayer?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : On this occasion, many people ask when they hear this hadith: What is the meaning of the Prophet (peace be upon him) intending to burn the houses of those who lagged behind, and then not doing it? Because the hadith says:
I intend that I should command a person to lead people in prayer
Sahih Muslim 652
; meaning: on his behalf (peace be upon him),
Then I would order men to gather firewood
from the wilderness,
Then I would burn their houses over them
, to the end of the hadith. So the Prophet (peace be upon him) intended it but did not do it. Why did he not do it? The answer is very clear: the houses in which those who lagged behind in the congregational prayer are located do not contain only them; they have their women, their offspring, and their children, and so on. It is known that women, as he (peace be upon him) said:
Their houses are better for them
; meaning that it is better for a woman to pray in her house than in the mosque, and the opposite is the case for men: it is better for a man to pray in the mosque than in his house. This is regarding adult women; their houses are better for them. As for the offspring, whether male or female, prayer is not obligatory upon them in the first place, and consequently, attending the congregation in the mosques is not obligatory upon them. If the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had carried out that severe threat, which is burning the houses of those who lagged behind in the congregational prayer, the punishment would have befallen those who do not deserve it. This contradicts the Qur'anic text which says:
(36) Or has he not been informed of what was in the scriptures of Moses (37) And [of] Abraham, who fulfilled [his obligations] - (38) That no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another (39) And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives
[An-Najm 53:36-39]
. This is the reason why the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not carry out the threat to burn the houses of those who lagged behind in prayer, meaning the congregational prayer in the mosque. The point is that this hadith is clear evidence for the majority of scholars who considered it disliked to establish a second or third congregation.
