The Shaykh : And in his saying
and he eats them in an odd number ويأكلهن وترا
there is evidence that what some people do, namely intentionally making the number odd in matters where this has not been prescribed, is an error. That is, some people now, if you offer them a drink twice, on the third time they say, "I am making it odd." This has no basis. Similarly, for example, if one wants to eat, he says three bites, then says, "I am making it odd." This has no basis. The principle is that we do not make anything odd except what the Sunnah has brought. As for the rest, we eat them as they come; if it happens to be an odd number, it is odd, and if it happens to be an even number, it is even. The evidence for this is that he said:
he eats them in an odd number يأكلهن وترا
Now, how many are the odd number? It must be three, because he said:
dates تمرات
, and the minimum of a plural is three. Otherwise, it is well known that the minimum for an odd number is one rak'ah, or one item. But in this case, the minimum is three because it is a plural, as he said:
dates تمرات
,
and he eats them in an odd number ويأكلهن وترا
, yes.
