Does my wife's grandmother uncover herself in front of me?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : The questioner, Abu Ahmad, also asks: Does my wife's grandmother uncover herself in front of me?

The Shaykh : Yes. The wife's grandmother is exactly like the wife's mother. Therefore, we should know a useful rule: if a man marries a woman and has intercourse with her, then her mothers and grandmothers are mahram (forbidden to him), as are her daughters, her sons' daughters, and her daughters' daughters, whether they are from a husband before him or a husband after him; they are all mahram to him.
As for the wife, the husband's father and his grandfathers are mahram to her, as are his sons, his sons' sons, and his daughters' sons; they are all mahram to the wife. Thus, the wife is mahram to all of the husband's fathers and grandfathers, and to all of his sons, his sons' sons, and his daughters' sons. Likewise, the husband is mahram to all of the wife's mothers, grandmothers, daughters, her sons' daughters, and her daughters' daughters. However, the last group—namely, the wife's daughters, her daughters' daughters, and her sons' daughters—do not become mahram unless he has intercourse with the wife. As for the first three groups—the husband's fathers, the husband's sons, and the wife's mothers—the prohibition is established by the marriage contract alone.

The questioner : May Allah thank you, O honorable Shaykh, and may Allah bless you and your knowledge, and make it beneficial.
