The questioner : This listener, Muhammad Hasan, from the Arab Republic of Egypt, Kafr Abu Hammaj, Sharqia, and residing in Ta'if, says: There is a customary practice among us that is not praiseworthy, and that is, O honorable Shaykh, when a dispute occurs between a man and his Muslim brother, he does not speak to him for a long period, and if he meets him on the road, he turns back from another path and does not speak to him and does not greet him, and if he goes to the mosque to pray and finds the man he is disputing with leading the prayer, he does not intend to pray behind him but rather leaves the mosque and goes out. What is your advice to people like these? Please inform us. May Allah reward you and preserve you, and may Allah bless you?

The Shaykh : Our advice to these people, whose situation reaches, after disputes, to what the questioner mentioned of boycotting, severing ties, hatred, and aversion, is that they should fear Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and know that this is from the whispers of Shaytan
Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling إِنَّما يُريدُ الشَّيطانُ أَن يوقِعَ بَينَكُمُ العَداوَةَ وَالبَغضاءَ فِي الخَمرِ وَالمَيسِرِ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:91]
and likewise in other matters.
So the servant should fear Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and not boycott his believing brother due to personal enmity, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his family
It is not permissible for anyone to boycott his believing brother for more than three days. They meet, and this one turns away and that one turns away, and the best of them is the one who starts with the greeting لا يحل لأحد أن يهجر أخاه المؤمن يلتقيان فيُعرض هذا ويُعرض هذا وخيرهما الذي يبدؤ بالسلام
.
Yes, it is permissible for a person to boycott his brother for three days or less in order to give the soul some freedom in dealing with the one who wronged him.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : As for what exceeds three days, it is not permissible to boycott him except for a Shari'ah reason, such as if this man is openly committing sins and open sinfulness, then he is boycotted so that perhaps he will repent to Allah and return when he sees that the Muslims have boycotted him.
And it is obligatory for the servant to be patient in obeying Allah and to be patient away from the prohibitions of Allah, and to restrain himself in establishing the Shari'ah of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), even if his soul says to him: do not pray behind this man, do not greet him, do not speak to him, if you find him on the road turn to another path, and the like of that. Let him disobey his soul and do what Allah has made obligatory upon him.
And if Allah knows from him good intention and the pursuit of truth, then Allah the Exalted will help him with that and lighten the matter for him. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you, O honorable Shaykh.
