Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: (And argue with them in the best manner) and how we argue with the Christians.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh :
argue with them in a way that is best جادلهم بالتي هي أحسن
[An-Nahl 16:125]
Is "best" in terms of wording and eloquence, or in terms of persuasion, silencing the opponent, and refuting the opponent's argument, or in both? Listen, man. Is it best in terms of wording, fluency, and eloquence, or in terms of persuasion, silencing the opponent, and refuting his argument, or in both?
The answer: It is in both, such that the argumentation is better than your opponent's in terms of eloquence, clarity, and strength. How often has clarity had a profound effect stronger than the effect of swords! For this reason, it came in the hadith:
Some eloquent speech is as effective as magic. إن من البيان لسحرا
Sahih al-Bukhari 5767
.
Some eloquent speech is as effective as magic. إن من البيان لسحرا
Sahih al-Bukhari 5767
. Likewise, it is best in presenting arguments, strengthening evidence, and invalidating the opponent's argument, because every arguer must have two things. - Pay attention, man -. Every arguer must have two things:
The first: Refuting the opponent's argument. The second: Establishing the arguer's argument. So you strengthen your argument and weaken your opponent's argument.
For this reason, we forbid our brothers who argue without knowledge; we forbid them from arguing, even if they are arguing to establish the truth, if they do not have knowledge, for they will fail, and at that time the result will be the humiliation of Islam. If a Christian wants to argue with you and you do not have an argument to counter this Christian's argument. And by Christian, I mean, may Allah bless you, one who claims to be a Christian. The Christians now say they are Christians, named after Christ, 'Isa ibn Maryam (peace be upon him). This designation is incorrect because they are what? They disbelieved in him and did not believe in him, and they are the farthest people from the law of 'Isa, or among the farthest people from the law of 'Isa. But they wanted to present the bad thing with a good face, so that they would have a kind of religious coloring. So they called themselves Christians, and we say we are more deserving of 'Isa than they are. As the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said when he arrived in Madinah and found the Jews fasting on the tenth of Muharram, and he asked them why they fast on the tenth of Muharram? They said, this is the day in which Allah saved Musa and his people and destroyed Pharaoh and his people, so we fast it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
We have a closer connection with Moses than you have نحن أولى بموسى منكم
Sahih Muslim 1130a
. Who is he addressing? The Jews who claim to be followers of Musa. We also address the Christians, saying we are more deserving of 'Isa than you are. You lied to 'Isa with your shirk (associating partners with Allah) regarding Muhammad, and you said when Muhammad came, this is clear sorcery. So you lied to 'Isa, and 'Isa will descend one day and break the cross that these people worship. And he will kill the pig that these people eat. And he will not accept anything but Islam; he will not accept the jizyah (tax on protected non-Muslims) ever; you must submit to Islam.
So I say: If you want to argue with a Christian, you must have knowledge of the falsehood, misguidance, and foolishness he is upon, above all else. And you must have knowledge of the law of Allah that you have, so that you can thereby refute his argument and establish what? Establish your argument. As for going down to argue with a Christian, hoping to belittle what he is upon of falsehood to argue with him with truth, while you do not know the truth, this is a mistake. This will be a defeat for you, not just for you, but for the Islam by which you profess faith.
