This is a message received by the program from the sister questioner (M. N. W.) from Makkah al-Mukarramah. She says in her message: I am asking about the meaning of the statement of Allah : [Al-Mujadilah: 1]. I ask you, may Allah reward you, to explain this verse?
Answer: This was revealed regarding a woman whose husband pronounced zihar against her. She came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to inform him that her husband was weak, old in age, and impotent, having no need for women, and she requested permission to remain with him. So Allah (Mighty and Majestic) informed about her in His statement, the Exalted: [Al-Mujadilah: 2] to the end of it.
The point is that he pronounced zihar against her, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) issued a ruling for him that he must pay the expiation. He must free a believing slave. If he is unable to do so, he must fast for two consecutive months. If he is unable to do that, he must feed sixty poor people. So he informed him that he was unable to fast and unable to free a slave, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to feed sixty poor people. This is the ruling for everyone who pronounces zihar against his wife. If he says to his wife: "You are forbidden to me," or "You are like my mother's back," or "You are forbidden to me like my mother's back," or "like my sister's back," or "my grandmother's back," or the like of that, then this is called zihar. It is forbidden and not permissible. It is not permissible for a Muslim to pronounce zihar; because Allah, the Exalted, said regarding it: [Al-Mujadilah: 2]. So it is an evil and a lie. His wife is not forbidden to him, and she is not like his mother. Rather, Allah has made her lawful for him. So he has no right to say: "She is to me like my mother's back" or "She is forbidden to me." He has no right to do that. And whenever he says that, he must repent and seek forgiveness, and he must pay the expiation, which is freeing a believing slave. If he does not find one, he must fast for two consecutive months. If he is unable to do that, he must feed sixty poor people, thirty sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg), each sa' shared between two people, of dates or rice or other staple food of the country [Al-Mujadilah: 3] before he approaches her. This is what Allah, the Exalted, clarified in His great Book, and what His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified. Yes.

Certainly has Allah heard the speech of the one who argues with you, [O Muhammad], concerning her husband and directs her complaint to Allah
