The Shaykh : It remains to be said that if we were to uncover this dead man, we would find nothing; we would find him in the same state as yesterday. How can the punishment be?
We say: First, it is obligatory for you to believe in the unseen. If you do not believe except in what is seen, you are not a believer, for Allah praised those who believe in what? In the unseen. This is a hidden matter, not a visible one. If it were a visible matter, there would be no benefit whatsoever in believing in it. Have you seen, if I said there is a fan above us, do you believe in this or not? Raise your head, this is a fan, do you believe in this or not? O people, glory be to Allah, I believe in this, that this is a fan. Yes, it is not the one above; let us make it a fan, this is a fan. Do you believe in this or not? Good. Are you praised for this belief? No. It does not require that you be praised for it. The praise is for believing in the unseen, O people, not for what is seen. If someone said to you, the sky is above us, do you believe or not? And are you praised for this belief? No. Good. So when we say that the punishment of the grave is a matter of the unseen that we do not know. And if it were a sensory, known matter, there would be no benefit in believing in it. Then we say, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the jinn who came to him and believed in him, he said to them:Sahih Muslim 450a Is the meaning of the speech understood or not? When you, O human, eat, you eat the meat and nothing remains but the bone, and you throw it away. The believing jinn find it to be the most abundant meat, all meat. Good, do you see this or not? Yes, you do not see it; you see the bone as it is, a bone. And if you found a piece of meat in it, you would return it and not throw it away. But you do not find anything, while the jinn find it to be the most abundant meat. And we do not see this meat. Is it not possible that this man is being punished in his grave and his body remains as it is? Answer, O people. Yes, rather, I made a mistake and you made a mistake. The correct answer is yes. Good. The sleeper sees many things in his dream, and according to the ailment of health, dreams increase. Sometimes he sees that he is in a valley with trees and palm trees. Yes. So when he wakes up, and the matter is a dream, there is nothing to grieve over, because he sees this garden and this bliss. And sometimes he sees that an enemy is pursuing him while he is sleeping, and he is fleeing and running. And when he wakes up, he says, praise be to Allah, it was a dream, it was not reality. Where is he in the first case and the second? Where is he? On his bed, his blanket is on him, he has not moved, and yet he sees what he sees. So matters of the soul are strange; it is impossible for this heavy, dense body to imagine what happens to this light soul, ever. So what is obligatory upon us, religiously and in creed, is to believe that a person is punished in his grave or what? Or blessed. And this is a matter of the unseen about which the Truthful informed us, so it is obligatory upon us to accept it.
