The story of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) with the angels.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In this surah, the story of Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him) also passed by us in the recitation of the Imam. He was the most generous host among the noble, hospitable prophets. He was the most generous of hosts among the children of Adam, as far as we know, except for Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). The angels came to him, intending to bring the punishment upon the people of Lut. They said:
Peace سلاما
. The scholars said: "meaning, we offer peace". Thus, the sentence is verbal, as the implied meaning is "we offer peace." He answered them with a better response, saying:
Peace سلام
He said:
Peace سلام
. This sentence is nominal, as the implied meaning is "upon you is peace." The nominal sentence implies permanence and continuity. Therefore, it is more eloquent than the verbal sentence. For this reason, Ibrahim's response was, what? Better than the angels' greeting. But only skilled grammarians know this. And skilled grammarians in our time are few. In our gathering here—complete the sentence—they are not absent, if Allah wills, they are not absent. But they are fewer than few. Yes, in any case, his response was better than the angels' greeting. And Allah the Mighty and Majestic said:
And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet [in return] with one better than it or [at least] return it وإذا حييتم بتحية فحيوا بأحسن منها أو ردوها
[An-Nisa 4:86]
. At least, good. But He said:
a people who disbelieved قوم منكرون
. This is part of his (peace and blessings be upon him) etiquette. He did not say, "You are a strange people," using the pronoun; rather, he omitted the pronoun. He said:
a people who disbelieved قوم منكرون
. The meaning is "You are a strange people," but he omitted the word of address so as not to hurt them. He said:
a people who disbelieved قوم منكرون
. Then they said "strange" and did not say "I have found you strange." "Strange" is passive in form. This is also another form of etiquette. In another verse, He said:
But when he saw their hands not reaching for it, he distrusted them فَلَمَّا رَأَى أَيْدِيَهُمْ لَا تَصِلُ إِلَيْهِ نَكِرَهُمْ
[Hud 11:70]
meaning, in his own self
and felt from them apprehension وَأَوْجَسَ مِنْهُمْ خِيفَةً
[Hud 11:70]
.
then he went stealthily to his family ثم راغ إلى أهله
meaning, he slipped away quietly so that he could bring the hospitality while they were unaware. Look at the generosity! Some people, when guests arrive and sit down, say, "Let me go and bring you lunch." "I will go and bring you lunch." Subhan Allah! Then, when he brings the lunch, he says, "By Allah, this bread cost eight riyals." "The bread is eight riyals." "And this dish is a beautiful, fine dish." "The plate cost five riyals, and we bought the table for twenty riyals, may Allah replace it for us." Then he stands over the lunch and appraises it as if they are selling it in a haggling market. Is this generous or not? This is stingy. This juice that came from him, he poured oil on it and added to the trouble. In any case, I say: Ibrahim (peace be upon him) went to his family and came with a fat calf, which he brought to them. Subhan Allah! Meaning, immediately. When did he slaughter this calf? And when did he cook it? But he (peace and blessings be upon him) was prepared for guests.
came with a fat [roasted] calf جاء بعجل سمين
[Adh-Dhariyat 51:26]
, and in a verse:
bringing [them] a roasted calf. جاء بعجل حنيذ
[Hud 11:69]
Is there a difference between them? Yes, there is a difference between them. But there is no contradiction between them, because "hanid" means roasted, and it is also fat.
And placed it near them; he said, "Will you not eat?" فقربه إليهم قال ألا تأكلون
[Adh-Dhariyat 51:27]
. - There is no god but Allah, get up, get up, my brother -
said, "Do you not eat? قال ألا تأكلون
[As-Saffat 37:91]
He did not say "Eat," because "Eat" is a command, and a command carries a type of superiority.
said, "Do you not eat? قال ألا تأكلون
[As-Saffat 37:91]
This is an offer. And an offer is etiquette. "Will you not eat?" But they did not eat. Why? Because they were angels. Angels do not have bodies; they do not need to eat or drink. We need to because our bellies are hollow. But angels do not; they are solid and have no hollows. So they do not need to eat or drink. And therefore, they did not eat. When they did not eat,
felt from them apprehension أوجس منهم خيفة
[Hud 11:70]
he feared them. Why? Because it is customary that if a guest does not eat from you, he intends harm against you. To this day, to our present day, if a guest does not eat, he intends harm against you.
They said, "Fear not. قالوا لا تخف
[Hud 11:70]
So they reassured him. They added to this:
and gave him good tidings of a learned boy. وبشروه بغلام عليم
[Adh-Dhariyat 51:28]
. The glad tidings are the announcement of what brings joy.
- Did sleep leave you? Did sleep leave you? Yes? Say yes or no? Yes, so you were sleeping at first. You admitted it. You say, "It left me." It is of no use after the admission. There is nothing after the admission. Denial is not possible. Rest, good. -
gave him good tidings of a learned boy. بشروه بغلام عليم
[Adh-Dhariyat 51:28]
This boy is Ishaq. And in Surat al-Saffat:
So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy. بشرناه بغلام حليم
[As-Saffat 37:101]
and he is not this one. The one intended in al-Saffat is Isma'il, the father of the Arabs. And that one is Ishaq, the father of the Children of Israel. Good. His wife was old, an old woman. She came in a scream, meaning a shout, a shout, she screamed, she struck her face. And what is it? And what is it? Or words of this meaning, because she was an old woman. Where would a child come from? She came in a scream, shouting and striking her face, as is the custom of women now. A woman, or perhaps even men, when informed of something they find strange. How will this be? Yes, in any case,
and struck her face and said, "[I am] a barren old woman!" صكت وجهها وقالت عجوز عقيم
[Adh-Dhariyat 51:29]
old woman means advanced in age, barren, she does not give birth. And here is a note I warn some of my brothers who are Arabs about. They say, "By Allah, may Allah reward you with good, I have an old father." I have an old father. Does this make sense or not? It does not make sense. Your father is an old woman? Who is the old woman? The mother. But this is found in the language of many of our Arab brothers who say, "The father is an old woman." Subhan Allah! Say, "The father is an old man." Correct. The old one is called an old man if he is male. A woman is called an old woman. Therefore, say to the brothers who speak in this way, purify your tongues from that, because if you address a person who is not Arab, and has learned the Arabic language, and it is known that those who do not speak Arabic learn formal Arabic, not colloquial, you say, "This is a man whose father is an old woman." They would object. What is this language? Therefore, purify your tongues from this word. So say, "The old man" for the old male, and "the old woman" for the old female. Good, may Allah bless you.
and said, "[I am] a barren old woman!" قالت عجوز عقيم
[Adh-Dhariyat 51:29]
The angels answered her with words in which there is no contradiction and no alternative.
They said, "So it is" قالوا كذلك
meaning, Allah the Exalted said this. So either it is a predicate for a deleted subject, the implied meaning being "the matter is so," or it is an absolute object for what follows, which is His saying:
Your Lord said قال ربك
meaning, so said your Lord, that a boy will be born to you.
indeed, He is the Wise, the Knowing." إنه هو الحكيم العليم
[Adh-Dhariyat 51:30]
The Wise, the All-Knowing, or the All-Knowing, the Wise? The All-Knowing, the Wise, the Wise, the All-Knowing. The Wise, the All-Knowing, or the All-Knowing, the Wise? Confirm, what is more common, that knowledge is mentioned first or wisdom? Is this the most common? Do you agree, people? What is the most common? Knowledge
Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Wise. إن الله كان عليما حكيما
[An-Nisa 4:11]
.
And Allah is Knowing and Wise. والله عليم حكيم
[An-Nisa 4:26]
. Rest. But why was "the Wise" mentioned before "the All-Knowing" here? Because this matter that occurred is contrary to what is customary. So there must be a wisdom. For this reason, the angels mentioned the name "the Wise" before the name "the All-Knowing," because this thing is contrary to the usual. But Allah the Exalted decreed it for a great wisdom. So when he knew that they were angels, he said:
What is your matter? ما خطبكم
meaning, what is your matter?
O messengers?" (58) They said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals, أيها المرسلون قالوا إنا أرسنا إلى قوم مجرمين
[Al-Hijr 15:57-58]
To punish them or to honor them? Yes, read the verse after it:
(33) To send down upon them stones of clay, (34) Marked in the presence of your Lord for the transgressors." لنرسل عليهم حجارة من طين مسومة عند ربك لمسرفين
[Adh-Dhariyat 51:33-34]
. These people are the people of Lut (peace be upon him). He was sent to them because, in addition to their disbelief in Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, they committed a heinous act for which they had no precedent, which is sodomy, meaning the intercourse of male with male. We ask Allah for safety and protection. These angels were sent to the people of Lut. They said:
To send down upon them stones of clay, لنرسل عليهم حجارة من طين
[Adh-Dhariyat 51:33]
by the command of Allah the Exalted. And do not ask, O man, what this clay took. Believe in what came in the Qur'an and do not ask, because these are matters beyond your capacity.
Marked in the presence of your Lord for the transgressors." مسومة عند ربك للمسرفين
[Adh-Dhariyat 51:34]
marked, meaning labeled, taken from "sima" which is the mark. Every stone had the name of its owner on it. Allah the Exalted said:
So We brought out whoever was in the cities of the believers. فأخرجنا من كان فيها من المؤمنين
[Adh-Dhariyat 51:35]
whoever was in the village
from the believers من المؤمنين
and they were Lut and his family, except his wife. His wife was a traitor, his wife betrayed him, she was a disbeliever and did not inform him of the disbelief, so she remained with her people.
