The story of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) when Allah commanded him to sacrifice Isma'il (peace be upon him)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Killing a soul is among the greatest of sins and among the destructive sins. Yet, on one day in history, killing a soul became an act of worship of Allah. In what case? Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him) was granted a son by Allah the Exalted, a firstborn, after he had reached extreme old age. Allah granted him Isma'il, who is the father of the Arabs, just as Ishaq is the father of the Children of Israel; thus, the Arabs and the Children of Israel are cousins. Allah granted him Isma'il as his firstborn. When he reached the age of running with him—meaning he grew up and began to run alongside his father, no longer a child who is not cared for, nor an adult who has become independent—when is the soul most attached to a child? When he is between childhood and adulthood, because he is young, running with his father and walking with him. His father loves him and brings him to gatherings. So, when he reached the age of running with him, he said:
O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you
[As-Saffat 37:102]
Allah showed him in a dream that he was sacrificing Isma'il, his son, who was his only son. And He had granted him in old age. Realize this matter: a man who has reached old age, and Allah has granted him a son who is his only son—what is the love for this child? It is immense and intense, especially since he has reached the age of running with him. So Allah the Exalted showed him in a dream that he was sacrificing him. The dreams of the prophets are revelation. He presented the matter to Isma'il and said:
O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think.
[As-Saffat 37:102]
So the answer of this son was the answer of the wise, intelligent believer:
He said, "O my father, do as you are commanded. قال يا أبت افعل ما تؤمر
[As-Saffat 37:102]
Glory be to Allah, meaning, sacrifice me; do not speak. Do what you are commanded, meaning, sacrifice me. And Ibrahim presented this matter to his son not to consult him, not to seek his opinion, and it is not possible for Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him) to consult his son in a matter commanded by Allah, ever. But to test the son: what is his position? So his position was the lion of positions:
He said, "O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast."
[As-Saffat 37:102]
Allah is the Greatest.
He said: You will find me among the patient
And yet, he did not rely on his strength. Isma'il did not rely on his strength. What did he say?
You will find me, if Allah wills, if Allah wills, among the patient
He said:
You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast." ستجدني إن شاء الله من الصابرين
[As-Saffat 37:102]
The matter is now complete. Allah the Mighty and Majestic said:
So when they both submitted
The doers are two; who are they? Ibrahim and Isma'il.
And he laid him down on his forehead
He laid him down on his forehead with force until he fell to the ground; his forehead fell to the ground. He did this so that he would not see his face when he was sacrificed, and so that the son would not see the knife and his father bringing it down upon his neck.
He laid him down on his forehead
At that time, relief came from the Lord the Mighty and Majestic.
Indeed, with hardship comes ease. So, with hardship comes ease.
Relief came from Allah. And our Prophet, our Imam, and our model, Muhammad the Messenger of Allah, said:
And know that victory is with patience, and that relief is with distress, and that with hardship there is ease.
.
When he was truthful in his worship of Allah, Allah the Exalted said:
We called to him, "O Abraham, وناديناه أن يا إبراهيم
[As-Saffat 37:104]
This "wa" (and) is not superfluous, as some grammarians have said, but the "wa" is a conjunction to something implied, meaning: "So when their truthfulness became clear and their complete submission to Allah was complete, We called him." Who called him? Allah the Mighty and Majestic.
"O Abraham, (105) You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
[As-Saffat 37:104-105]
This is a great trial. This matter is a command to kill a soul, to kill a soul, and moreover, a soul that is not distant among relatives; the son is a part of his father, so he is among the closest of relatives. So in that, killing a soul and severing a family tie came together. Are you with me or not? Killing a soul and severing a family tie. This severance and this killing, when it was by the command of Allah, became what? It became worship, a nearness. It became worship and nearness. Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him) thereby showed that he loves Allah the Mighty and Majestic, and that the command of Allah the Exalted is above every command, above the desires of the soul. And so he was rewarded with what? That Allah made him a close friend. Allah the Exalted said:
And Allah took Abraham as an intimate friend.
[An-Nisa 4:125]
And our Prophet Muhammad the Messenger of Allah was also a close friend, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Indeed, Allah has taken me as an intimate friend, just as He took Ibrahim as an intimate friend
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 26:27
