The Shaykh : And among the benefits of this hadith is the emphasis on using the miswak before prayer. Why? Because a person will stand before Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and will speak. What will he speak? The Qur'an, the glorification of Allah, the takbir, and supplication. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed that when a person stands to pray, he is conversing with Allah (Mighty and Majestic). It is appropriate that when you converse with Allah, you do so with a pure mouth, so that what comes out of the air during speech is what? Pleasant, pure, and clean. Therefore, it is prescribed with emphasis that when a person wants to pray, he should use the miswak. Now, if he does not have a miswak, should he use a handkerchief or something similar? Yes. The scholars differed on this: some said that the miswak must be a stick. Others said that the act of using the miswak is achieved with a stick, which is better and more pleasant, or with a finger, or with a handkerchief, because the purpose of the miswak is cleaning and purification. So for the one who uses his fingers or a handkerchief, he gets of the Sunnah according to the amount of cleaning that was achieved.
And among the benefits of this hadith is the exaltation of the status of prayer, in that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) almost commanded the use of the miswak before every prayer.
