How to reconcile Allah’s saying (Exalted is He), “And build it before My eyes” (singular), with “They sail before Our eyes” (plural)?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : The second question asks: How do you reconcile “My eyes” and “Our eyes”?

The Shaykh : Yes, before discussing the reconciliation between Allah’s saying (Exalted is He):
And make it with my eyes ولتصنع على عيني
and His saying (Exalted is He):
It runs with our eyes تجري بأعيننا
, I tell you that it is impossible for there to be any contradiction in the Qur’an, nor in the authentic Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Nothing contradicts anything else, and the Book never contradicts the Sunnah. If someone thinks there is a contradiction, that is due to a deficiency in his knowledge. Yes, it is due to a lack of knowledge or a deficiency in his understanding. Why is it impossible for there to be a contradiction in the Book of Allah, or in the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), or between the Book and the Sunnah? Because they are all truth, and truth does not contradict itself. If we were to logically accept that truth could contradict itself, then one of the two contradictory things would be false. The Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) contains nothing false, and likewise, what is authentic from the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cannot contain falsehood. Then we say again: It is impossible for the Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and what is authentic from His Sunnah to contradict reality. It is impossible for them to contradict reality. For example, someone asked: How do you reconcile Allah’s saying (Exalted is He):
And at the earth - how it is spread out? وإلى الأرض كيف سطحت
[Al-Ghashiyah 88:20]
with the fact that it is now established that the earth is spherical? Is it now established that the earth is spherical? Yes? Strange, why do you hesitate on this? There is no problem with the earth being spherical, because if you went now from Jeddah heading west, you would exit at Dammam in a straight line. You would exit from here. So, what is the earth? Spherical. There is no problem, and do not be afraid to state a fact: it is spherical. If someone asks: How do you reconcile this established fact, which cannot be denied, and if a denier denied it and attributed that to Islam, it would be the greatest flaw in Islam, if he asks how you reconcile this with His saying:
And to the earth, how it was spread out وإلى الأرض كسف سطحت
?
I say: The Qur’an does not contradict reality. The Qur’an does not contradict reality. So, even though it is spherical, it is a flat surface for the servants, where they plant, till, sow, and build, and they find it level, not uneven? Level. So this is a surface. And I say to him: In the Qur’an, there is what testifies to the reality that the earth is spherical; it does not contradict reality. Read Allah’s saying (Exalted is He):
He wraps the night over the day يكور الليل على النهار
[Az-Zumar 39:5]
“And the night wraps over the day.” Over what? Over what body? The night, and what does it revolve around, my brothers? Around the earth, without doubt. So it is spherical. Read Allah’s saying (Exalted is He):
(1) When the sky has split [open] (2) And has responded to its Lord and was obligated [to do so] (3) And when the earth has been extended إذا السماء انشقت وأذنت لربها وحقت وإذا الأرض مدت
[Al-Inshiqaq 84:1-3]
When is this? On the Day of Resurrection. So it is not currently extended. Therefore, it came in the hadith that on the Day of Resurrection, it will be extended like the stretching of leather, meaning skin. So, praise be to Allah, there is nothing in the Qur’an that contradicts reality, absolutely. And there is nothing in the Qur’an that contradicts itself, absolutely. And there is nothing in the Sunnah that contradicts itself, and there is no contradiction between the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah. So, if that is established,
let us return to Allah’s saying (Exalted is He):
And make it with my eyes ولتصنع على عيني
and His saying:
It runs with our eyes تجري بأعيننا
How do you reconcile between them? This is singular, and “eyes” is plural?
The answer is very simple. The rule in the Arabic language is: The singular, when it is a proper noun (possessive), implies generality. The singular, when it is a proper noun, implies generality. It is singular. Read Allah’s saying (Exalted is He):
And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them إن تعدوا نعمة الله لا تحصوها
[An-Nahl 16:18]
“Blessing” is singular, not plural? Its form is singular, but its meaning is plural. What is the proof? “You cannot count them.” Because if it were one blessing, we could count it.
So, the singular proper noun implies generality. Good. “My eyes”
And make it with my eyes ولتصنع على عيني
is a singular proper noun, so it generalizes to everything established for Allah of eyes. Everything established, and it does not contradict plurality at all. The singular here does not contradict plurality. So what about the plural? Why was “eyes” pluralized?
Because the plural implies magnification. The plural implies magnification. That is why Allah mentions Himself sometimes in the plural form for magnification, not for plurality. He says:
We said قلنا
and He says:
We نحن
and He says:
We sent down نزلنا
The plural pronoun is for plurality, for magnification? For magnification, without doubt, because Allah is One (Mighty and Majestic). So “Our eyes” was pluralized for the sake of magnification, especially since it was added to what implies magnification, which is “We.” So there is a correspondence between the noun and what? And the noun to which it is added. So the plural was considered in terms of meaning, which is magnification, and verbal correspondence, which is that it was added to what implies magnification. So it was appropriate to come with the plural form. Now it is clear that there is no contradiction between the singular and the dual.
Good. A man said: “My wife is divorced,” and he has four wives. Who is divorced? My brothers, I have given you a rule now. We said: “The singular proper noun implies generality”. Good. He said: “My wife is divorced,” and he has four. All four are divorced, unless he intended to specify by his intention or by the cause. If there was one cause among the wives that angered him, and the others did not anger him, and he said: “My wife is divorced,” meaning the one who angered me, that is the cause. Or if he himself intended that a specific one is meant, then only what he intended is divorced. But the indication of the wording implies generality.
Good. A man said: “My slave is free,” and he has four slaves. Are they all freed? They are all freed, unless there is an intention or a cause. Pay attention to this rule, may Allah bless you. The rule is: “The singular proper noun implies generality”. The proof is:
And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them وإن تعدوا نعمة الله لا تحصوها
[An-Nahl 16:18]
Yes, correct.

The questioner : A questioner says: How do you reconcile, O honorable Shaykh?

The Shaykh : You say: O honorable Shaykh.

The questioner : O honorable Shaykh, O honorable Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Yes, with an open fatha, it is a vocative proper noun.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
