The questioner : May the Shaykh, we begin this episode with a question from the listener 'Uwaid ibn Muray'i from northern Dhahab. He says in this question: Some people write verses from the Noble Qur'an and hang them on children, such as the two protective surahs and Surat al-Ikhlas, intending that they protect them from the evil eye and bring them benefit and guidance. Is this a valid practice? I ask for your guidance, may you be rewarded.

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and those who follow them in excellence until the Day of Judgment. Hanging verses on the chests of children is prohibited because it falls under the category of amulets in its generality, as the hadiths reported on this matter did not exclude anything that is hung.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Furthermore, it exposes the verses to desecration, because a child does not guard against harm befalling what is hung on him from the Qur'an. It may become stained with something ritually impure, or he may enter the place of relief with it, and so on. For this reason, this practice is prohibited. It is said: If you wish to seek protection for your children with something, seek it for them by reciting over them.
Some scholars have permitted hanging written Qur'an on a sick person for the purpose of seeking healing through it, and they cited as evidence the generality of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss. وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ القُرءانِ ما هُوَ شِفاءٌ وَرَحمَةٌ لِلمُؤمِنينَ وَلا يَزيدُ الظّالِمينَ إِلّا خَسارًا
[Al-Isra 17:82]
.
The precaution is not to do this, neither to ward off calamity as the questioner mentioned, nor to remove it as we have indicated. Let one make use of what the Sunnah brought regarding seeking protection for a person through recitation, and reciting over the sick person as well, in accordance with what the Sunnah brought. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
