What is said when visiting the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Even when we visit the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), what do we say? We say: "Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim, for You are Praiseworthy and Majestic. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim, for You are Praiseworthy and Majestic." I say that this is also from my own opinion, my brothers, not from the Sunnah in the sense that the Messenger did not say to his Companions, "When you visit my grave, say so-and-so." But I say: The Messenger taught his Ummah (the Muslim community) to greet him and to send blessings upon him. What is narrated from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) is that he used to say, "Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah. Peace be upon you, O Abu Bakr. Peace be upon you, O 'Umar," and then he would leave. In this place, there are not these long supplications that tire people and prevent people from leaving the mosque. Rather, it is a greeting while you are walking, or you stand for this small amount. You stand before the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then you take a step to the right to be opposite Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), then you take a step to the right to be opposite 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). This is what is narrated. As for these long, composed supplications that only renew sorrows, for this reason you find some of the people who visit the cemetery in al-Baqi' finding them in weeping and screaming. This indicates that this visit is a visit of sorrows, not a visit of supplication for them, while they are in greatest need of supplication for them: Sahih Muslim 974a as the Sunnah has brought, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 974a.
