Is it permissible for a father to give to some of his children and not to others?

The questioner : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

The Shaykh : Yes, yes.

The questioner : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
What is your opinion regarding a man who gave his son a sum of money...

The Shaykh : To whom did he give it?

The questioner : To whom did he give his son a sum of money to help him with marriage, and after a period of time he gave the other son a sum to buy a car, and after a period of time he lent him a sum to build him a house...

The Shaykh : Did he lend to the second one or the first one?

The questioner : He lent the second one a sum of money to build him a house, so the son paid off part of the loan and his father forgave him the rest, knowing that he has other children who received nothing. May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : Yes, it is obligatory to be just between the children, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Be afraid of Allah, and be just to your children. اتّقوا الله واعدلوا بين أولادكم
Sahih al-Bukhari 2587
As for the one he gave to so he could marry, this is a right that follows maintenance, and he is not required to give the others the same, except if they reach maturity and want to marry, then he marries them. As for the one he gave the car to, it is not permissible for him to give him the car; if the son needs the car, he gives it to him as a loan (ariyah) in his possession, and the ownership belongs to the father. And the third one?

The questioner : ...the loan.

The Shaykh : Yes, and it is not permissible for him to waive any part of the loan he lent; he must collect it in full, except if the children are adult, mature sons and daughters and they allow it willingly, then there is no harm.
