And they will have therein purified spouses
[Al-Baqarah 2:25]
Glory be to Allah, when Allah mentions the fruit, He mentions the spouses. Reflect on this in all the verses. Why? Because they and their spouses will enjoy this provision and this sustenance.
(55) Indeed the companions of Paradise, that Day, will be amused in [joyful] occupation - (56) They and their spouses - in shade, reclining on adorned couches.
[Ya-Sin 36:55-56]
You will find that Allah pairs this with that, because all of this is enjoyment, but this is enjoyment of one type and this is enjoyment of another type. This is enjoyment in taste and food, and this is another type of enjoyment, because by that the blessing is completed.
they will have therein purified
[Al-Baqarah 2:25]
“Spouses” is a plural. Does the meaning imply that each person has multiple spouses, or does each individual have one spouse? But since they were in the plural, the plural was matched with the plural? The first option, because a person in the Hereafter has multiple spouses. And “spouses” is the plural of “spouse,” and the term “spouse” applies to both the male and the female. For this reason, it is said that a woman is a spouse and a man is a spouse. Allah the Exalted said:
And for you is half of what your wives leave
[An-Nisa 4:12]
But in the terminology of the jurists of inheritance, they attach the feminine marker to the female, to distinguish her from the male when dividing the inheritance.
And they will have therein purified spouses
[Al-Baqarah 2:25]
Now, if a woman dies while young and did not marry, will she have a spouse in the Hereafter? Yes, she will have a spouse in the Hereafter, either from the people of this world or from those whom Allah the Mighty and Majestic creates, because there will remain in Paradise a surplus from those who entered it from the people of this world, so Allah will create for her groups of people and admit them into Paradise by His grace and mercy. And His saying: “purified” includes purity of the outward and the inward. So she is purified from foulness: no urine, no feces, no menstruation, no post-natal bleeding, no irregular bleeding, no sweat, and no bad breath. She is purified from every outward, tangible impurity. She is also purified from inward impurities such as envy, hatred, aversion, and animosity, and the like. She is purified from everything, from every impurity or harm, whether outward or inward, unlike the spouses of this world. But the spouses of this world are a perfect match for their male spouses, because if she were not purified from this, what about her husband? Her husband would be like her. But in the Hereafter, everyone is purified.
And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally.
[Al-Baqarah 2:25]
And this is the completion of the blessing: that they will abide in these gardens, not seeking to move away from them, nor being moved from them. And as it came in the hadith:
For you is health, and you will never be ill, and youth, and you will never grow old, and life, and you will never die
By that, the bliss is completed. But the highest bliss for the people of Paradise is the seeing of the Face of Allah, Glory be to Him and Exalted is He. This is the highest bliss, as Allah the Exalted said:
For them who have done good is the best [reward] and extra
[Yunus 10:26]
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) interpreted it as the seeing of the Face of Allah.
