Continuation of the interpretation of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “And when you said, ‘O Moses, we will never believe in you until we see Allah openly. So the lightning struck you while you were looking.’”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Read the verses with us now. Have you understood the two opinions now, or not? Have you understood the two opinions? Yes, good. Or did you not understand the two opinions? Good.
The student: Repeat.

The Shaykh : The first opinion states that Moses (peace be upon him) chose seventy men from his people for the appointed time of Allah, for His appointment, and he went with them. When he began to speak with Allah and Allah spoke with him, they said:
We will not believe in you until we see Allah openly
They said this statement when Moses was going out to the appointed time of Allah. And some scholars said: Rather, it was when he came with the Torah, when he returned from the appointed time of Allah and the Torah was revealed to him and he brought it, that they said: No,
We will not believe in you until we see Allah openly

The student: The context supports the second one.

The Shaykh : Which one?
The student: The last one?

The Shaykh : The last one means they said:
And [recall] when We gave Moses the Scripture and criterion
[Al-Baqarah 2:53]
Then he mentioned the story of the calf, and this was after Moses came with the Torah. Then after that he mentioned:
And [recall] when you said, "O Moses, we will never believe you until we see Allah outright"
[Al-Baqarah 2:55]
So the apparent context indicates that this statement was made when he came with the Torah and said: This is from Allah. So they said:
we will never believe youلن نؤمن لك
[Al-Baqarah 2:55]
After the adhan, if Allah wills...
And Moses chose from his people seventy men for Our appointment. And when the earthquake seized them, he said, "My Lord, if You had willed, You could have destroyed them before and me [as well]. Would You destroy us for what the foolish among us have done? This is not but Your trial by which You send astray whom You will and guide whom You will. You are our Protector, so forgive us and have mercy upon us; and You are the best of forgivers.
[Al-A'raf 7:155]

What indicates the first opinion? This was with us, was he conversing with Allah? Some of them supported the first opinion with this verse, but the truth is there is no support for it, because this is:
And the shaking seized themوأخذتهم الرجفة
The shaking struck them and upon them was a lightning bolt. They were struck by lightning and died and were revived. But Moses feared that he would die and that it would befall him and that what happened to the first group would happen, or he feared that he would die even though the second one was after him. So it appears to me that this does not prevail. The first opinion does not prevail with this verse due to the difference between the two punishments. What is this punishment? The lightning bolt. And that one: the shaking. Allah knows best. The student: .......The Shaykh :
so the thunderbolt took you while you were looking on.
[Al-Baqarah 2:55]
When they said this, the lightning struck them. The lightning means the death by which they were struck.
And His saying:
And you were looking
means some of you were looking at some of you, some of you were looking at some of you until you fell down. The phrase in His saying:
And you were looking
is a state (hal), a state from where? From the kaf in His saying:
So it seized youفأخذتكم
the lightning, meaning while the state was that you were looking, some of you looking at some of you until you all perished.
