Exegesis of the beginning of Surat al-Layl up to the saying of Allah the Exalted: "Indeed, upon Us is the guidance..."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment.
As for what follows:
This is the seventy-fifth session of the Open Door, which takes place every Thursday of every week.
This is the eighth Thursday of the month of Jumada al-Ula, 1415 AH, and we begin this session with the exegesis of the Surah in which Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:
(1) By the night when it covers (2) And [by] the day when it appears (3) And [by] He who created the male and female,
[Al-Layl 92:1-3]
So Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, swore by the night
When it covers.
meaning when it covers the earth and blankets it with its darkness, for "ghashy" means covering.
And [by] the day when it appears
[Al-Layl 92:2]
meaning when it appears and becomes manifest, and that is with the rising of the dawn, which is the light that is the precursor to the rising of the sun. The sun is the sign of the day, just as the moon is the sign of the night.
And [by] He who created the male and female,
[Al-Layl 92:3]
meaning He created the male and the female. According to one of the interpretations, the "ma" here is a source particle (masdar), or it means "He who created the male and the female," and He is Allah, Mighty and Majestic, according to the other interpretation. So according to the first meaning, Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, swore by the creation of the male and the female.
And according to the second, Allah the Exalted swore by Himself, because He is the One who created the male and the female.
Indeed, your efforts are diverse.
[Al-Layl 92:4]
So you see now that Allah swore by opposing things regarding opposing things: the night is the opposite of the day, the male is the opposite of the female, and striving is opposed, being good and bad. Thus, the thing sworn by corresponds to the thing sworn upon, and this is part of the eloquence of the Qur'an.
So it is as if Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is saying: The difference between the night and the day, and between the male and the female, is a manifest matter that is not hidden. Likewise, the deeds of the servants are varied and diverse; some are good, some are corrupt, and some mix good and corrupt. All of this is by the decree of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. And Allah guides whom He wills to a straight path.
Then He detailed this diverse striving and said:
So as for he who gives and fears Allah and believes in the best, We will make easy for him the easy way
.
As for he who gave: that is, he gave what he was commanded to give, whether wealth, status, or knowledge.
And feared.
He feared what he was commanded to fear from the forbidden things.
And believed in the good.
meaning: he believed in the good word, which is the word of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and the word of His Messenger, for the most truthful and best of speech is the speech of Allah, Mighty and Majestic.
Then We will make it easy for him toward the ease.
The "sin" here is for realization, meaning: whoever gives, fears, and believes in the good, then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will make easy for him the easy path in all his affairs, in his religious and worldly matters.
And for this reason, you will find that the easiest people in their work are those who fear Allah, Mighty and Majestic, who give, fear, and believe in the good. The more a person fears Allah, the easier his affairs become for him. Allah the Exalted said:
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him of his matter ease.
[At-Talaq 65:4]
And the further a person is from Allah, the more difficult his affairs become.
And for this reason, He said:
But as for he who withholds
[Al-Layl 92:8]
He did not give what he was commanded to give.
and considered himself self-sufficient وَاسْتَغْنَى
We ask Allah for well-being and safety.
and denied the best وَكَذَّبَ بِالْحُسْنَى
meaning: with the good word, which is the word of Allah and His Messenger.
Then We will make it easy for him toward the hardship.
He will make easy for him the difficult path in all matters.
But Satan may come to a person and say: We find that the affairs of the disbelievers are made easy. It is said: Yes, their affairs may be made easy, but their hearts burn with fire, distress, and tightness, as Allah the Exalted said:
and whoever He wants to misguide - He makes his breast tight and constricted as though he were climbing into the sky
[Al-An'am 6:125]
Then what they enjoy is only the enjoyment of the body, not the enjoyment of the soul. And it is also a burden upon them, due to the saying of Allah the Exalted about them:
We will progressively lead them [to destruction] from where they do not know. (183) And I will give them time. Indeed, my plan is firm.
[Al-A'raf 7:182-183]
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: إن الله ليملي للظالم حتى إذا أخذه لم يفلته وتلا قوله تعالى : وَكَذَلِكَ أَخْذُ رَبِّكَ إِذَا أَخَذَ الْقُرَى وَهِيَ ظَالِمَةٌ إِنَّ أَخْذَهُ أَلِيمٌ شَدِيدٌ Indeed, Allah gives respite to the wrongdoer until when He seizes him, He does not let him escape. And he recited His saying, the Exalted: And thus is the seizure of your Lord when He seizes the towns while they are wrongdoers; indeed, His seizure is painful and severe..
And these are those whose good things were hastened for them in their worldly life. And yet, this world is a paradise for them in relation to the Hereafter.
It was mentioned regarding Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, the commentator of al-Bukhari with the commentary he named *Fath al-Bari*, and who was the Chief Judge in Egypt, that one day he passed by while riding in a carriage pulled by mules, with people around him. He passed by a fat Jewish man who sold butter and oil. You know that sellers of butter and oil have dirty clothes and a poor state. So he stopped the carriage and said to Ibn Hajar: Your Prophet says:
The world is a prison for the believer and Paradise for the disbeliever.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2324Sahih (Darussalam)
How can I be in this state and you in that state?! Ibn Hajar replied on the spot: I am in a prison in relation to what Allah the Exalted has prepared for the believers of reward and bliss, because the world is nothing in relation to the Hereafter, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
And the space occupied by the whip of one of you in Paradise is better than the world and what is on it.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1664Sahih (Darussalam)
And as for you, he said to the Jew, you are in a paradise in relation to what has been prepared for you of punishment if you die upon disbelief. So the Jew was satisfied with that, and it became the cause of his Islam. He said: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said:
And what will his wealth avail him when he falls?
[Al-Layl 92:11]
meaning: what will his wealth avail him when he is stingy with it and he perishes? What will the wealth avail? It will not avail anything. Then He said, Exalted is He:
Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance.
[Al-Layl 92:12]
And that will come, if Allah wills, in a future session, because now the time for questions has arrived. We begin with the right, and only one question per person.
