I came on the day of Eid to pay the alms given at the end of Ramadan, but I did not find any of the poor. What should I do? And is there a sin on me in this case if I left the alms?

The questioner : The listener Abu Bakr from the city of Jeddah says: I came on the day of Eid to pay the alms given at the end of Ramadan, but I did not find any of the poor. What should I do? And is there a sin on me in this case if I left the alms?
The Shaykh : It is obligatory for one who intends to pay the alms given at the end of Ramadan to know to whom he will pay it before the day of Eid, so that when the day of Eid arrives, he already knows whom to give it to. It is well known that the best time to pay the alms given at the end of Ramadan is on the day of Eid, before going out to the prayer. However, what appears from the situation of this questioner is that he was negligent and careless, and did not prepare in his mind anyone to whom to pay the alms given at the end of Ramadan, so when the day of Eid came, he went searching. This is an error on his part. It is obligatory for him to repent to Allah, seek forgiveness from Allah, and make up the alms given at the end of Ramadan, meaning he pays it to those who are entitled to it, even after the day of Eid has passed.
As for one who intentionally delays paying it until the prayer has ended, it does not suffice for him as the alms given at the end of Ramadan, due to the hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father)Sunan Abi Dawud 1609Hasan (Al-Albani). Yes.

If anyone pays it before the prayer (of 'Id), it will be accepted as zakat. If anyone pays it after the prayer, that will be a sadaqah like other sadaqahs (alms).
