What is meant by defining the obligatory as that for which its doer is rewarded for compliance and its leaver is punished by choice?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : May Allah reward you. What is meant by one who defines the obligatory as: that for which its leaver is rewarded for compliance? What... its leaver for compliance, and its doer is rewarded for what? What is meant by defining the obligatory as that for which its doer is rewarded for compliance and its leaver is punished by choice?

The Shaykh : No, also for compliance... meaning: that for which its doer is rewarded for compliance, because a person may do the obligatory without compliance with Allah, because it is a habit, so he is not rewarded for it, even if his obligation is thereby discharged. Likewise, a person may do an obligatory act and the intention of worshiping Allah does not occur to him, such as finding a drowning man in the water and saving him from drowning without realizing that he intended by that to comply with the command to save a protected life. As for leaving it for compliance, that is necessary, because the one who leaves the obligatory—yes, you said the obligatory.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : Yes, and "its leaver is punished" means: he deserves punishment for leaving it. And "by choice" means: if he was forced to leave it and coerced, he is not punished for that, because he was coerced into leaving it.
