Is the 'Id sacrifice sufficient for both the living and the deceased if they share in it?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : This questioner is from Buraydah in the Qassim region, and his name is F. M. K. al-Harbi. He says: "O honorable Shaykh, is the 'Id sacrifice sufficient for the living and the deceased if they share in it? Please answer my question, and may Allah reward you."

The Shaykh : If the one offering the sacrifice is a single person.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : This means that a man buys a sacrificial animal and designates it for himself and his deceased father, or his deceased mother, or his deceased relatives; in that case, there is no blame on him. However, if a living person shares in it with a bequest for a deceased person—for example, if he buys a sacrificial animal for four hundred riyals, two hundred from the bequest and two hundred from his own funds—then this is not permissible. This is because sharing in a single sacrificial animal is prohibited, except in the case of camels and cows. In the case of camels, seven people may share in one, and in the case of cows, seven people may share in one. As for sheep, whether they are ewes or goats, two people may not share in one.
As for sharing in the reward, there is nothing wrong with it. If a person designates this sacrificial animal for several people, there is no blame on him. However, sharing in ownership and joint possession is not permissible. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you, O honorable Shaykh.
