Does the shortening of time in our era affect the distance of travel?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : May Allah forgive you. Some employees have workplaces that are more than one hundred kilometers from their homes, and those who go out for recreation travel to a distance of one hundred and fifty kilometers and return on the same day. Does the shortening of time have an effect on not taking the dispensations of travel?

The Shaykh : As for the one who defines the distance as eighty-three kilometers or thereabouts, he says: If these people go, even if it is for work and they return at the end of the day, they are travelers. This is the well-known position in the madhhab of Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him). As for the one who says that it returns to custom and usage, such a trip is not considered travel.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : However, if you go out... for example, for a day and return, this is not a traveler according to the opinion that the criterion is custom, unless you stay there for a day or two. In that case, such a trip is considered travel, because travel in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), as estimated by some scholars, was a distance of two days. Also, because if a person intends to stay there for a day or two, meaning two days or more, he must prepare for travel. So if you can determine this by custom, there is no harm, as it is closer to the truth. And if you cannot, as if the custom differs or is confused, or if you are in doubt, then take the distance as the criterion. Yes.
