What is the distance for shortening the prayer while traveling?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : What is the stronger position regarding the distance, O Shaykh?

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : What is the stronger position regarding the distance?

The Shaykh : As for the distance, we did not find anything specific. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah says: The Messenger did not specify a distance for his Ummah, nor were there surveyors at that time saying, "This is a kilometer, this is more, and this is less."
The scholars who estimated the distance, for example, in cubits, measures, or miles, had no evidence for it. Then they estimated it, may Allah have mercy on them, using the cubit, the span, the finger, and the hair of a mule—the stallion. Well, does that mean if I am here and the companion between whom and me is a cubit, he is a traveler and I am not a traveler? Who says this?! Who says this?!
So the closest of the opinions is that it is referred to what people call travel and for which they pack their bags. This is travel, and what is not so is not travel. And here this session ends, because the time has been announced as finished. We ask Allah the Exalted to make it a good meeting for me and for you, and until next week, if Allah wills. And peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and we send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets, and upon his family and his Companions, and those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment.
As for what follows:
Indeed, on this day, Thursday, the fifth of the month of Dhul-Qa'dah, year 1412, we are opening the first meeting of this month in our home, and we ask Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, to make it a blessed meeting.
And on this occasion, I would like to remind you that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
he who treads the path in search of knowledge, Allah would make that path easy, leading to Paradise for him من سلك طريقًا يلتمس فيه علما سهل الله له به طريقا إلى الجنة
Sahih Muslim 2699a
And your presence in this place is only for the sake of—peace be upon you—attaining knowledge. We ask Allah to make the work sincere for His face, and to guide us and you to what He loves and is pleased with. Indeed, He is Generous and Bountiful. Yes, how are you?

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : May Allah preserve you, and we praise Allah with good. May Allah bless you. What do you have? Please, go ahead.
