How is the purity of a woman with post-natal bleeding determined? And what is the maximum duration of post-natal bleeding?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : O esteemed Shaykh, how does a woman become pure?

The Shaykh : How?

The questioner : How does a woman become pure if it is her first childbirth, thirty days have passed since the delivery, and the blood is still continuing, and then immediately after that yellowish discharge appeared and continued until the fiftieth day? How does she become pure?

The Shaykh : We see that this woman, if the blood stops for her, should perform the full ritual bath, pray, and fast, even if it is before the fortieth day, and even if she has yellowish discharge, based on the hadith of Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her):
We used not to regard yellowish and brownish discharge as anything important. كنا لا نعد الصفرة والكدرة شيئا
Sunan an-Nasa'i 368Sahih (Darussalam)
This is the wording of al-Bukhari. So if she becomes pure and prays, that would be better. But if she repeats what came before, that is good. And if she does not repeat it, she owes nothing.

The questioner : But O Shaykh, there is a remainder in the question in your letter regarding women's blood, and perhaps there is a difference between menstruation and post-natal bleeding: if the blood stops in menstruation and then the yellowish discharge returns during the time of menstruation, it is considered menstruation. Is post-natal bleeding limited to a period of forty days, or is it more or less?

The Shaykh : The correct view is that post-natal bleeding lasts up to sixty days; this is the correct view, up to sixty days. But if it stops before the sixtieth, or before the fortieth, or before the twentieth day, then she prays, performs the full ritual bath, prays, and fasts, and her husband may have intercourse with her, and there is no harm.

The questioner : Even if the yellowish discharge comes immediately after the blood without any purity in between?

The Shaykh : Yes, that is what we have seen recently, because this is more comfortable for women. And some women tell us: the yellowish discharge remains with them for more than the month. And some of them say: the yellowish discharge continues until the second menstruation. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : Please, ask.

The questioner : O Shaykh, may Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : You asked.

The questioner : No, you did not ask.

The Shaykh : Please proceed.
