The questioner : This questioner says: I am a teacher who teaches the Qur'an and I take a wage for it. Is there anything wrong with that, O honorable Shaykh?
The Shaykh : There is nothing wrong with taking a wage for teaching the Qur'an. In fact, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih al-Bukhari 5737 Just as a person buys a mushaf to read from it with dirhams, so there is no blame on him if he hires a person to teach him the Qur'an. However, we say that it is better for a person, if Allah the Exalted has made him wealthy, not to take a wage for teaching the Qur'an. This is because he gains a great reward by teaching the Qur'an without a worldly wage. The reader of the Qur'an has ten good deeds for every letter, and the teacher who is the reason the student learned the Qur'an is undoubtedly rewarded with a reward like that of the reader, because he guided to good, and the one who guides to good is like the one who does it.
Accordingly, we advise our brothers who teach people the Book of Allah the Exalted, whether in the circles of the mosques or in their homes, if Allah has made them wealthy, to advise them not to take a worldly wage for their teaching so that the reward of the Hereafter is available to them, and the Hereafter is better and more lasting.[Yusuf 12:57] So on this basis, we advise our brothers as we have mentioned, but if they take a wage for this, there is nothing wrong with it. Yes.
The questioner : May Allah bless you.
The Shaykh : There is nothing wrong with taking a wage for teaching the Qur'an. In fact, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
You are most entitled to take wages for doing a Ruqya with Allah's Book.
إن أحق ما أخذتم عليه أجرا كتاب اللهAccordingly, we advise our brothers who teach people the Book of Allah the Exalted, whether in the circles of the mosques or in their homes, if Allah has made them wealthy, to advise them not to take a worldly wage for their teaching so that the reward of the Hereafter is available to them, and the Hereafter is better and more lasting.
And the reward of the Hereafter is better for those who believed and were fearing Allah.
