What is the ruling on taking a fee for teaching the Qur'an?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : Are the intrinsic attributes the same as the descriptive attributes?

The Shaykh : No, the descriptive attributes are part of the intrinsic attributes. For example, the hand, the face, the eye, the leg, and the foot are descriptive attributes, and they are intrinsic, meaning they are necessary for Allah (Mighty and Majestic). The intrinsic attributes that are also descriptive are, in that sense, descriptive because, had Allah not informed us of them, we would not have known them, such as hearing, sight, knowledge, power, and will, and the like. Yes.

The questioner : O honorable Shaykh, may Allah reward you, what is the ruling on taking a fee for teaching the Qur'an? And is there a warning regarding this?

The Shaykh : What was said?

The questioner : A warning.

The Shaykh : Taking a fee for reciting the Qur'an is forbidden. That is, if a person comes and says, "I will recite for you for a fee," that is forbidden and he receives no reward. However, there is nothing wrong with taking a fee for teaching the Qur'an, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
You are most entitled to take wages for doing a Ruqya with Allah's Book. إنّ أحقّ ما أخذتم عليه أجرًا كتاب الله
Sahih al-Bukhari 5737
.
And because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made teaching the Qur'an a bridal gift, and the bridal gift is a consideration.
And because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted taking a fee for reciting for the sick, as in the story of the companions who stayed as guests with a group of Arabs. These people refused to host them, so they moved to the side. Allah sent a scorpion against their leader, and it stung him. They came to the Companions and said, "Is there anyone among you who can recite?" They said, "Yes, but we will not recite for you unless you give us something." They gave them a flock of sheep. The reciter recited Surat al-Fatihah over the one who was stung, and he rose up as if he had been untied from a rope. They took the sheep and brought them to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said:
Narrated Abu Sa’id Al Khudri: Some of the Companions of Prophet (ﷺ) went on a journey. They encamped with a clan of the Arabs and sought hospitality from them, but they refused to provide them with any hospitality. The chief of the clan was stung by a scorpion or bitten by a snake. They gave him all sorts of treatment, but nothing gave him relied. One of them said: Would that you had gone to those people who encamped with you ; some of them might have something which could give you relief to your companion. (So they went and) one of them said: Our chief has been stung by a scorpion or bitten by a snake. We administered all sorts of medicine but nothing gave him relief. Has any of you anything, i.e. charm, which gives healing to our companion. One of those people said: I shall apply charm; we sought hospitality from you, but you refused to entertain us. I am not going to apply charm until you give me some wages. So they offered them a number of sheep. He then came to and recited Faithat-al-Kitab and spat until he was cured as if he were set free from a bond. Thereafter they made payment of the wages as agreed by them. They said: Apportion (the wages). The man who applied the charm said: Do not do until we come to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and consult him. So they came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) next morning and mentioned it to him. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: From where did you learn that it was a charm ? You have done right. Give me a share along with you. خذوا واضربوا لي معكم بسهم
