The ruling on reciting the Qur'an for people for a fee

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is the ruling on reciting the Qur'an for people for a fee? Please inform us—may Allah reward you with good?

Answer:
If the intention is to teach the Qur'an to people and help them memorize it, then there is no harm in taking a fee for that—in the most correct of the scholars' opinions—due to the authentic hadith regarding reciting to the Ladiyyah on the condition of a known fee, and due to his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) in the same hadith:
You are most entitled to take wages for doing a Ruqya with Allah's Book.إن أحق ما أخذتم عليه أجرًا كتاب الله
Sahih al-Bukhari 5737
Al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated it in his Sahih. However, if the intention is to take a fee for mere recitation on any occasion, then it is not permissible to take a fee for that.
And Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned that he does not know of any disagreement among the scholars regarding the prohibition of that.
