What is the ruling on the salary of a worker who works for a person who earns money through forbidden means?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Your Eminence, there is a worker who works with a man, and this man earns money through deception. What is the ruling on the worker's salary?

The Shaykh : The worker works for a man who earns money through forbidden means, but he pays him for his work. He owes nothing, unless he is working in a matter that assists that man in the forbidden act, in which case it is not permissible.

The questioner : ... He says, "You must do this job, or I will send you back."

The Shaykh : But he performs the work that involves forbidden deception, not in all cases. So, he should be sent back; he should not work at all, because he is assisting in sin and aggression. However, if his guarantor has a farm and earns money unlawfully, and this worker works in the farm with no involvement in his earnings, there is no harm. But if he assists him in earning money through forbidden means, it is absolutely not permissible for him to remain with him.

The questioner : So what about the salary he has already received?

The Shaykh : In principle, he should not keep it from now on. The salary he received previously is forgiven, as Allah the Exalted said:
So whoever has received an admonition from his Lord and desists may have what is past فمن جاءه موعظة من ربه فانتهى فله ما سلف
[Al-Baqarah 2:275]
But in the future, after he knows the Islamic ruling, it is not permissible for him to keep it.
