What is riba al-fadl and riba al-nasi'ah?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : We conclude this session, O honorable Shaykh, with a question from a female listener who says: I ask you to clarify the meaning of riba al-fadl and riba al-nasi'ah?

The Shaykh : Riba al-fadl means the riba of excess.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : For example, if a person sells one dirham for two dirhams, or one dinar for two dinars, or one sa' of dates for two sa' of dates, this is riba al-fadl.
Riba al-nasi'ah is the delay of possession in cases where possession is required. For example, it is obligatory that if a person sells dates for dates, the two amounts of dates be equal and that possession be taken before the parties separate. If he sells dates for barley, it is obligatory that possession be taken before the parties separate. If the possession is delayed, then the first case, i.e., selling dates for dates of the same kind, involves riba al-nasi'ah. Likewise, if he sells dates for barley and the possession is delayed, it involves riba al-nasi'ah. Riba al-nasi'ah and riba al-fadl may coincide if he sells dates for a greater amount of dates with a delay in possession. In this case, there is riba al-fadl because of the excess, and there is riba al-nasi'ah because of the delay in possession. So riba al-nasi'ah means the delay of possession in items subject to riba where mutual possession is required before separation, and riba al-fadl is the excess in items where equality is required. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh, and may Allah bless you and your knowledge, and benefit the Muslims through you.
O my dear brothers, O my dear listening brothers, the honorable Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen, professor at the College of Sharia and Principles of Religion in Qassim, and preacher and imam of the Grand Mosque in the city of Unayzah, has answered your questions.
May Allah reward him for his excellence, and thank you for being present.
