Is it permissible to continue boycotting one who openly commits sin, such as pursuing women, or the owner of a satellite dish and tobacco, even though he has repented and reformed?

The questioner : Your Eminence, there is a man who was afflicted with pursuing women in the markets and looking at them, and he has apparent sins such as a satellite dish and tobacco. One of his brothers learned of this and informed the young men around him, so they boycotted him for five years, did not speak to him, and did not advise him or warn him against this action, even though, praise be to Allah, he has repented to Allah and asks Allah for steadfastness. As for his brothers, they have continued to boycott him, and he fears that he will not remain steadfast on the guidance, for they are aiding Satan against him. What is your guidance regarding one who openly commits sin?
The Shaykh : I say: As for one who openly commits a sin that is less than disbelief, if there is a benefit in boycotting him, then it is obligatory to boycott him, meaning that if we boycott him, he will reform, then we must boycott him. And if there is no benefit in boycotting him, it is forbidden to boycott him, because he is a believer. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 2560a So this man, according to what came in the question, has reformed, and the description they saw as warranting boycott has been removed from him. So now, they must honor him, rejoice in his guidance, and help him in that. As for him, he must remain steadfast on what Allah has guided him to, and not pay attention to these people, whether they boycott him or maintain contact with him; it does not concern him. He has only repented to Allah, not to the servants of Allah. So he must be patient, and let him know that the outcome is for the righteous.
