The scholars have differed on whether to remove the hair and nails of the deceased during the washing of the body; what is your opinion on this?

The questioner : Your Eminence, the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) have differed on whether to remove some of the hair or nails of the deceased during the washing of the body; what is your opinion on this issue?

The Shaykh : Yes, what I see is that it should be removed if there is dirt in it, because if there is dirt in the nails, it is difficult to scrape this dirt out, so the nails are cut and thrown away or buried. As for the pubic hair, no, the pubic hair is not removed because it necessitates exposing the private parts, and there is no need for that. As for the armpits, they are removed because they usually have a bad smell.
And what should be done is to clean the deceased completely, due to the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to the women who were washing his daughter:
Three times, or five or sevenاغسلنها ثلاثاً أو خمساً أو سبعاً
