The Shaykh : Rather, when we enter into prayer, external preoccupations come to us, and they are like different colors and shapes of dreams. We should strive to keep our hearts present as much as we can, due to the saying of Allah the Exalted: [At-Taghabun 64:16]. If you were to say, "If a person is preoccupied with these whispers from the beginning of the prayer to the end, is the prayer invalidated?" Some scholars said that it is invalidated, because the essence and spirit of the prayer have been lost from this prayer; these are movements without meaning. However, the majority of scholars are of the opinion that the prayer is valid but deficient. They cited as evidence that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us that Satan comes to the one praying and says, "Remember such and such at such and such a time," and so on. But I say now: whatever the case may be, his prayer is deficient to the extent of the humility he has lost.
