Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Is it permissible to fast on Friday alone as a make-up fast?

The Shaykh : Fasting on Friday alone is something the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade. A woman from among his wives entered upon him, or he entered upon her, and he found her fasting, so he said to her:
Did you fast yesterday ? She said: No. He again asked: Do you intend to fast tomorrow ? She said: No. He said: So break your fast. أصمت أمس؟ قالت : لا! قال: أتصومين غداً؟ قالت : لا! قال : فأفطري
Sunan Abi Dawud 2422Sahih (Al-Albani)

Likewise, if Friday happens to be the Day of 'Ashura and he fasts it, there is no blame on him for fasting it alone, because he fasted it because it is the Day of 'Ashura, not because it is Friday. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) as saying: Do not single out the night (preceding) Friday among the nights for prayer and do not single out Friday among days for fasting but only when anyone among you is accustomed to fast (on dates) which coincide with this day (Friday). لا تخصوا يوم الجمعة بصيام ولا ليلتها بقيام
Sahih Muslim 1144b
, specifying the particularity, meaning that a person should do this for the particularity of Friday and the night of Friday.
