The questioner : A man fasted on Thursday and then intended to fast one day and break the fast the next day, following the fasting of Dawud (peace be upon him). Then the day of fasting fell on a Saturday by itself. Is that permissible?

The Shaykh : Yes, it is permissible for a person who is fasting one day and breaking the fast the next to fast on a Friday by itself, or on a Saturday, or on a Sunday, or on any other day, provided that it does not coincide with days on which fasting is forbidden. If it coincides with days on which fasting is forbidden, he must refrain from fasting. For example, if a man is fasting one day and breaking the fast the next, and his day of breaking the fast falls on a Thursday and his day of fasting falls on a Friday, there is no blame on him for fasting on that Friday, because he is not fasting on Friday because it is Friday, but because it is the day he is scheduled to fast. However, if the day he is scheduled to fast coincides with a day on which fasting is forbidden, he must abstain from eating and drinking, just as if it coincided with 'Id al-Adha or the days of Tashreeq. Likewise, if a woman is fasting one day and breaking the fast the next, and she experiences something that prevents fasting, such as menstruation or post-natal bleeding, she does not fast in that case.
