The Shaykh : His statement (may Allah be pleased with him) — I mean al-Zubayr ibn al-'Awwam — that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when he sat in prayer, includes all sitting, but the mention of the description indicates that the intended meaning is when he sat in the final tashahhud, because this description is among the characteristics of tawruk, where he said: he would place his left foot between his thigh and his leg and spread out his right foot. It is necessary to spread out the right foot in this state, because it is not possible to keep it upright and then be able to place the left foot between the thigh and the leg, except with great difficulty that prevents him from achieving tranquility. But if he spreads out the right foot, and at that time it will be on the side closest to the big toe, then he can place the left foot between the thigh and the leg. And his statement: , his statement: on his knee means on the edge of the thigh, because the edge of the thigh is the knee; this is the apparent meaning. However, another description was reported, which is that he would place his left hand, tucking it into the knee, meaning he would place it like this, tucking it into the knee as if he were gripping it.
And his statement: , his statement: he pointed with his finger. When does this pointing occur? It came in another narration, but it is not in the two Sahihs: that he moves it during the supplication. Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned that he would raise the index finger slightly, and then every time he made a supplication, he would point. Point to what? He pointed to the height, because he is supplicating to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and He is on His Throne. There is a second description of tawruk, which is to keep the right leg upright and bring the left leg out from under the shin. And there is a third description, which is to spread out the right and left feet and bring the left foot out from under the shin. Perhaps the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did this according to what was easiest and simplest for him. So either it is said: choose from these three descriptions what is easiest for you, or it is said: these three descriptions are all a recommended practice, so do this one time and that one another time.
