The Book of Mosques and Places of Prayer-06a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Qutaybah narrated to us, Layth narrated to us from Ibn 'Ujlan. He said: Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah also narrated to us, and the wording is his. He said: Abu al-Khala al-Ahmar narrated to us from Ibn 'Ujlan from 'Amir ibn 'Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr from his father, who said:
when God’s Messenger sat making supplication he placed his right hand on his right thigh and his left hand on his left thigh, pointed with his forefinger, placed his thumb on his middle finger, and covered his knee with the palm of his left hand

The Shaykh : This is a hadith with a different wording, and I think it is the same wording, but the words differ.
It says: When he sat to make supplication, he would place his right hand. If we take the generality of "when he sat to make supplication" and the generality of the first wording, "when he sat in prayer," we say that this includes every sitting, which encompasses the first tashahhud, the sitting between the two prostrations, and the final tashahhud. However, the description of the sitting in the first wording indicates that his intention when he sat in prayer was the final tashahhud. Here, the description of the sitting was not mentioned; only the description of placing the hands was mentioned. Based on this, we say that sitting in supplication occurs in three places: between the two prostrations, in the first tashahhud, and in the final tashahhud. This is what was mentioned regarding placing the right hand on the right thigh, the left hand on the left thigh, pointing with the index finger, placing the thumb on the middle finger, and tucking the left palm into the knee.
That is, the description is like this: placing the right hand on the right thigh, and the left hand on the left thigh.
And he pointed with his index finger: meaning the index finger of the right hand, and he placed his thumb on his middle finger like this. He did not mention moving it, only the placement.
He said: And he tucks his left palm into his knee. There is no problem with the first wording: he places his left hand on his left thigh and tucks his left palm into his knee, because it is true to say his left hand is on the thigh even with the tucking. And what we mentioned about the right hand being in this position in all sittings: Wail ibn Hujr stated this explicitly in his narrations in the Musnad of Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) with a chain in which the author of al-Fath al-Rabbani said it is good, and the one who traced the hadiths of Zad al-Ma'ad said it is authentic, and he stated explicitly that this occurs even between the two prostrations. As for the statement of some that this was not reported, we say: the one who affirms is given precedence over the one who denies. Furthermore, it has not been reported in an authentic, weak, or good hadith that the right hand is spread out on the right thigh in any sitting of the prayer. If someone says it is spread out, we ask: where is the evidence? Did they not, when they wanted to clarify how the left hand is placed, say that he would spread it on his left hand? Why did they not say this about the right hand? So what we see in this issue is that the position of the right hand between the two prostrations is like its position in the two tashahhuds.
