The Book of Mosques and Places of Prayer-06a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: And 'Abd ibn Humayd narrated to us, Yunus ibn Muhammad narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salama narrated to us from Ayyub from Nafi' from Ibn 'Umar:
That the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when he sat in the tashahhud, would place his left hand on his left knee and his right hand on his right knee, and he would count fifty-three and point with his index finger. أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كان إذا قعد في التشهد وضع يده اليسرى على ركبته اليسرى ووضع يده اليمنى على ركبته اليمنى وعقد ثلاثة وخمسين وأشار بالسبابة
.

The Shaykh : This is like the first one. The counting of fifty-three was not fully grasped by him, but it is known among the Arabs; they mention numbers by counting on their fingers, like this or that or that. The author of *Subul al-Salam* mentioned it when discussing this hadith, and it is difficult to visualize, because we have not grasped it practically, and looking into these matters is difficult for a person.
And his saying:
When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sat to say the tashahhud كان إذا قعد في التشهد
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1275Sahih (Darussalam)
: does not contradict the generality of the first wording, which is 'Abdullah from Nafi'—this is Ayyub from Nafi', and that is 'Abdullah from Nafi'—because mentioning some individuals of a general category with a ruling that does not contradict the general category does not necessitate specification, as the scholars of usul al-fiqh mentioned, and they said: if I said, "Honor the students," and then I said, "Honor Zayd," and he is among them, this does not contradict specifying the honor for Zayd. So here we say: when he sat in the prayer, it was not restricted by his saying "in the tashahhud." As for the second wording: when he sat in the tashahhud, it is restricted, but it does not contradict the generality of the first wording.
